Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1) is Google's image generation and editing model, released on Oct 6, 2026 as an update to Nano Banana 2. In the Gemini API it costs $30 per 1M image output tokens, which works out to $0.0336 per 1K image, $0.0504 per 2K image and $0.0756 per 4K image. That is half of what Nano Banana 2 charges per image.

Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana 2, 2 Lite and Pro
| Model | API model ID | Input / 1M | 0.5K image | 1K image | 2K image | 4K image |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2.1 | gemini-nano-banana-2.1 | $1.50 | — | $0.0336 | $0.0504 | $0.0756 |
| Nano Banana 2Shuts down Oct 29, 2026 | gemini-3.1-flash-image | $0.50 | $0.0448 | $0.0672 | $0.1008 | $0.1512 |
| Nano Banana 2 Lite | gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image | $0.25 | — | $0.0336 | — | — |
| Nano Banana Pro | gemini-3-pro-image | $2 | — | $0.1344 | $0.1344 | $0.24 |
Nano Banana 2.1 is the default pick: the same $30 image rate as Nano Banana 2 Lite, with 2K and 4K output on top. At 1K the two cost the same per image ($0.0336), but Lite's prompts are cheaper ($0.25 vs $1.50 per 1M input tokens) and it only outputs 1K, so it suits thumbnails and high-volume drafts.
Nano Banana Pro charges $120 per 1M image tokens: $0.1344 for a 1K or 2K image and $0.24 for 4K. At 2K that is 2.7× the price of Nano Banana 2.1, so it only pays off when you need what the Pro model does better.
Nano Banana 2 is being retired. If you still use gemini-3.1-flash-image, moving to 2.1 halves the image part of your bill before the Oct 29, 2026 shutdown.
Worked example: 10,000 images a month
Say you generate 10,000 product shots a month at 2K, each from a 200-token text prompt.
- Image: 1,680 tokens × $30 ÷ 1M = $0.0504
- Prompt: 200 tokens × $1.50 ÷ 1M = $0.0003
- One month: ($0.0504 + $0.0003) × 10,000 = $507
Through the Batch API the same month costs $254. On Nano Banana 2 it would be $1,009, and on Nano Banana Pro $1,348.
What else adds to the bill
- Thinking and text output. Any text the model writes back, including thinking tokens, is billed at $7.50 per 1M tokens. Higher thinking settings raise the cost of each image.
- Reference images. Images you send for editing or as references are input tokens at $1.50 per 1M. Check usage_metadata in the API response for the exact count.
- Search grounding. Grounding with Google Web and Image Search includes 5,000 free requests a month, shared across all Gemini 3.x models, then costs $14 per 1,000 requests.
- Batch API. Jobs that can wait cost 50% less across input, text output and image output.
FAQ
On the standard tier, $0.0336 for a 1K image, $0.0504 for 2K and $0.0756 for 4K. The Batch API halves that to $0.0168, $0.0252 and $0.0378. Your prompt is billed on top at $1.50 per 1M input tokens.
Per image, yes: it costs half as much. Image output is $30 per 1M tokens against $60 on Nano Banana 2, so a 2K image drops from $0.1008 to $0.0504. Input and text output cost more ($1.50 vs $0.50 and $7.50 vs $3 per 1M tokens), but a 200-token prompt only adds $0.0002 per image.
No. The Gemini API free tier does not include Nano Banana 2.1, so every image is billed at paid-tier rates. On the paid tier, Google says your prompts and images are not used to improve its products.
gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Nano Banana 2 is gemini-3.1-flash-image, Nano Banana 2 Lite is gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image and Nano Banana Pro is gemini-3-pro-image.
Google will shut down gemini-3.1-flash-image on Oct 29, 2026 and lists Nano Banana 2.1 as the replacement. Nano Banana 2.1 has no 0.5K output, but its 1K image ($0.0336) already costs less than a 0.5K image on Nano Banana 2 ($0.0448).
1,120 output tokens at 1K, 1,680 output tokens at 2K, 2,520 output tokens at 4K. Image output tokens cost $30 per 1M, which is where the per-image prices come from.
